President's Message

Happy April, BOMA Greater Tucson!

We wrapped up March with an excellent presentation from Ilan Wurman, Associate Professor at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law with the ASU, specializing in administrative and constitutional law. Professor Wurman spoke on his recent involvement in the lawsuit against the City of Phoenix and the current lawsuit against the City of Tucson regarding homeless encampments. The property owners that Ilan represented won their case in Phoenix, and the Tucson case just went to trial a few weeks ago. Alongside his team, one of Professor Wurman’s focuses of the case was the constitutional right of the homeowners and businesses to live and operate without public nuisance. It was interesting to hear his arguments less focused on homeless encampments being the problem, and instead on holding the city officials accountable for their responsibilities in keeping the public areas clean and safe. The City of Phoenix was ultimately ordered to address the massive downtown homeless encampment of over 1,000 people. Temporary shelter was offered to approximately 700 people, and 585 accepted the help. The New York Times published a brief article covering a business owner from the encampment area and the ruling - A Sandwich Shop, A Tent City and an American Crisis (requires a NY Times subscription to read).  Ilan Wurman’s own article can be read here – A Legal Strategy for Tackling Homelessness.

Saddle up for the Annual BOMA GT Trade Show on April 23rd! The theme is Wild West, so dust off your cowboy boots and get registered. Breakfast will begin at 8:00 AM, with the event starting promptly at 8:30 AM. This event is a great opportunity for our Associate Members to showcase their products and services while building relationships with our Principal Members and their guests. Principal Members can invite their assistants, engineers, or facility managers at no charge. Be sure to bring plenty of business cards for the vendor drawings. BOMA GT will hold a raffle for attendees who visit each vendor booth and will present a prize for the best decorated booth. Associate Members – ONE booth slot available so hop online to register or reach out to Luann if you want to secure your spot. I hope to see you all there!

Looking ahead to May, BOMA GT will have the opportunity to tour the Tucson Convention Center to see their recent expansions and improvements. This tour will begin at 3:00 PM on May 14th and will take approximately 1-1.5 hours.  After the building tour, please join us at the DoubleTree Tucson Convention Center from 4:15 – 6:00.  Thank you to Kustom Disaster Recovery & Restoration and Allied Universal Security Services for partnering together and sponsoring the mixer.  Should be a lot of fun.

As a reminder, Southern Arizona Book Heroes has been chosen by the Programs Committee as this year’s focus for charitable contributions. A donation drive to collect new books, journals, notebooks, and other small comfort items will be active through our Christmas in July Mixer. Ashley Chiquete with PICOR and Barbara Camacho with SERVPRO, our two members leading these efforts, shared at our March Luncheon that a donation collection bin will be present at our future meetings, and we will accept Amazon gift cards for our committee members to shop on your behalf. Donation bins will also be at the following drop-off sites from now until the July Mixer:

PICOR Commercial Real Estate Services; 5151 E Broadway Blvd., Suite 115, Tucson, AZ
Town West Realty; 555 E River Rd., Suite 201, Tucson, AZ

For ideas, the Southern Arizona Book Heroes Amazon Wishlist can be viewed here. Items can be shipped to BOMA GT at the following address:  10645 N. Oracle Rd., Suite 121; #239, Oro Valley, AZ

Thank you all in advance for your participation with our donation drive benefiting Southern Arizona Book Heroes and their efforts to provide comfort to children in crisis.

As our Programs Committee finalizes the 2024 calendar and brainstorms for 2025, please let us know what events, education opportunities, or other ideas you would like to see brought to BOMA GT.

OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH RECIPIENT FOR 2024

GIVING CHILDREN HOPE IN THEIR MOMENT OF DESPAIR

We will begin collecting items at our March 26th luncheon.

We will be collecting NEW books, journals, etc. to assist in restocking the duffle bags our law enforcement and first responders carry to help positively impact the kids during an emergency interaction.  Each duffle bag holds approximately 35 books.  Our goal is to fill at least 20 bags!  Currently, they are in need of books which must be generic (no holiday related) for ages 0 - 3; 3 - 6 and 7 - 10.  Coloring books, journals and my communication cards.

Unsure what to buy?  Get a gift card and let us shop for you.

You can shop through the Amazon wish list.  How to get the books to BOMA GT:
1.  Have the books/items shipped to yourself and bring them to a meeting.
2.  Contact Barbara Camacho or Ashley Chiquete to coordinate a pickup.
3.  Drop the books/items off at one of our drop off locations:
PICOR or Town West Real Estate
4.  You can also ship your items to the BOMA GT office:  10645 N. Oracle Road; Suite 121; #239, Oro Valley, AZ  85737

This is your opportunity to give a child in crisis a book of their own and make a positive difference in their life.
